Reflection 2

The progressive movement from the beginning has been trying to change the way education has been looked at and with the help of Mr. Dewey it has evolved. In this movement students were actually been thought about by making a big focus on “child-centered” classroom and curriculum. The only thing is that there are some flaws with the movement but in a way it has opened the door for students to be view as independent thinkers, creative and able to express their feelings.
The progressive movement has two main principles which are continuity and interaction. Now continuity because the learning process that is gradual because everything that the students were learning has been something that they have been building on. The other principle is interaction because some things over time change so education needs to adjust to the new changes. For example in history whether American or World history textbook were only been focused on the accomplishments of man and women were not part of them. Some of the text were even been prejudice. But over time the textbook have been changing, I remember that in one of the world history class we were able to see how the same textbook but different versions have been changed. In previous version women and minority races were not even talked about or mentioned but in the recent version they were included.
Language Arts and Social studies have been view as to different subject, remembering when I was in school there were no such thing as integrating language arts and social studies but looking it as a pre-service teacher I can understand that both subject are similar because they both involve reading and writing. The progressive movement in American Education is important because this movement altered the way education was view. Today we can even think about the integration of language arts and social studies or to plan a thematic unit with as many subjects as possible.
