Biography

My name is Karla Lopez and I was born in Nicaragua. I came to USA when I was eight years old and have lived in Miami most of my life. At first I did not know what career I wanted to pursue and I was about to graduate with my AA, but I still remember I was asking my dad "what should I study?". At first my dad did not give me an answer but before the semester finished my ENC teacher was going over our research paper and she told me that I would make a really good teacher because of the way that I was helping and proof reading my group members essay. From that moment on every where that I went people were telling me that I should be a teacher, so after many confirmation I decided to go and speak with Mrs. Sanchez. She told me everything that I needed to do to get into the bachelors program and from that moment on that is what I have been doing. The reason that I chose teaching is because I love to teach and to work with children, mostly middle school age. At this moment I am part of a mentoring program at my church and I have eight youth that I work with. To me they are awesome because you can have meaningful conversations and all they want is for someone to listen to them, but I think that everyone just needs someone to listen to them. Now a day many of the youth lack good role model, so what I try to do is to get them focus on the best role model which is Jesus.

In this class I'm expecting to learn how to teach integrate language arts and social studies. I'm not quite sure what this mean but what I do know is that language arts and social studies are similar. Once I figure out what the class is based on than that is when i will be able to figure out more or less what I want to get out of this class. After the introduction and seen all the assignments, quizzes and reflections; now I want to learn to be more proficient with technology, reading and writing. I do not like to read but when something grabs my attention I can read all day and if I want my future students to be better readers, writers and thinkers I am going to need to be an example. One thing that I have learned is that you cannot give someone something that you do not have and students have a way of knowing if you have it or not.

So all I want out of this class is to equip myself with tools and knowledge not only for my future career but also for my future students. And to have fun while I'm at it because it seems like a lot of work and reading so the only way to get through this semester is with a positive attitude. If I want to become a better reader I am going to need to read more.
